Why You Want Your Child to Have Checkups

Posted .

If your child has a problem with their smile, they may not tell you, and sometimes that’s because they don’t understand what is happening inside their mouth. Telltale signs that something is off may manifest as your child appearing anxious, depressed or tired.

More than one-half of all children aged 5-9 years have at least one cavity or filling. If a cavity is left undiagnosed, it can harm your child because a painful tooth or chronic dental problem can lead to difficulty in eating, speaking and concentrating and may end up causing your child to miss school.

Our dentist at Copper Cove Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Troy Hardy, is happy to help you decide how often your child should be seen for dental checkups. We will evaluate the following to help make this assessment:

  • Your child’s eating habits.
  • How well your child’s teeth are maintained.
  • Any past treatment your child has received and what their current needs are.
  • Whether your child drinks fluoridated water.
  • Any factors that may indicate susceptibility to oral diseases.

Children can usually begin brushing their own teeth by the time they are seven years old, but they will require your supervision until they are around 10-11 years old. You will also want to continue flossing your child’s teeth until they are around ten years old, as flossing is a skill which takes longer to master.

Regular dental checkups help your child to maintain a healthy smile. Please call our Copper Cove Pediatric Dentistry team in Herriman, Utah, at 801-446-2080 to schedule your child’s next appointment with Dr. Troy Hardy. We are here to help your child with all of their oral health needs!
