A Damaged Mouth Guard Needs to Be Addressed

Posted .

Many athletic associations and schools require contact sports athletes to use a protective mouth guard during practices and games. Unfortunately, many of these individuals complain that stock mouth guards and thermoplastic mouth guards obstruct breathing and often feel uncomfortable in the mouth.

This tempts some athletes to forgo frequent use leaving them at increased risk of suffering oral trauma, fractured teeth and other complications. If your child is unhappy with their mouth guard, dentists like Dr. Hardy and Dr. Bushell can provide them with a custom fit protective mouth guard.

This oral appliance will be created from very durable materials to comfortably match the specific characteristics and the contours of your child’s dentition. This will provide them with effective protection and the easy passage of air. You should also note that even though this unit will be very durable, it is not invulnerable to damage.

A bad oral habit such as chewing on their custom mouth guard, inserting it into the face guard can damage the oral appliance. If you do notice a problem with your child’s new mouth guard, it’s best to have it addressed as soon as possible. In some of these cases, our dentists might be able to repair or replace the unit.

If you have a child living in the Herriman, Utah, region and are interested in providing them with a custom mouth guard, please call 801-446-2080 to schedule an appointment at the dental offices of Copper Cove Pediatric Dentistry.
