Earning Your Tooth Fairy Wings

Posted .

Your child has their first loose tooth. You know what this means: it’s time for the Tooth Fairy! But you’ve never taken on this role before. You don’t know what to do. Those are some big—well, small—shoes to fill! Dr. Hardy, Dr. Bushell, and our team are happy to offer some fun ideas.

Setting Expectations
Children generally lose their baby teeth from about age five until about age seven. You will want to set an expectation regarding the Tooth Fairy when your child’s first baby tooth comes out. How much money should the Tooth Fairy leave? A Tooth Fairy poll conducted by Delta Dental found that over the last decade, the Tooth Fairy has paid between $1.50 and $2.50 on average per tooth. Instead of having the Tooth Fairy leave money, you may also consider leaving small toys or healthy snacks.

Starting the Tradition
To encourage good brushing habits, incorporate the Tooth Fairy in your child’s dental care education. You may decide to tell your child that the Tooth Fairy pays more for cavity-free teeth. Another way to encourage your child to brush and floss is to write him or her notes from the Tooth Fairy. You can find printable Tooth Fairy note cards online or you can design letters on your own with small paper.

Unforeseen Circumstances
Help your child to write a letter to the Tooth Fairy if he or she has misplaced a tooth that has fallen out. He or she can explain the situation and perhaps suggest that the Tooth Fairy look in certain places for the tooth. Another unforeseen circumstance may arise if the “Tooth Fairy” doesn’t have any cash on hand when a tooth is lost. This being the case, you can write an IOU letter. You could explain to your child that lots of children are losing their baby teeth and sometimes this happens on the same day. Leaving a promise of a reward for the next night is usually enough to placate the child in these circumstances.
