How to Treat Children’s Cavities

Posted .

Cavities are dangerous dental problems that can harm the teeth and smile if you let them. In fact, if you ignore them, they can grow and spread to infect more of the tooth. They can even spread to affect the surrounding teeth! This is why it’s important to get cavities treated as soon as possible. If your child has a cavity, please schedule an appointment with our dentists, Dr. Hardy and Dr. Bushell; they are happy to treat the cavity and restore your child’s oral health.

The treatments available to help your child’s little chomper include:

-Fluoride treatments: Fluoride can strengthen the tooth enamel and reverse the cavity. However, this is only the case at the early stages of the cavity-forming process. By exposing the enamel to fluoride, it can essentially start to rebuild itself.

-Dental filling treatment: An amalgam or composite dental filling can be used to restore the tooth. Your dentist will remove the decayed sections of the tooth, will clean the tooth, will fill the tooth hole with the filling, and will solidify the filling with a special dental light.

-Dental crown treatment: A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is custom made for the tooth involved. It replaces the tooth enamel and restores all health and function. This treatment is used when the cavity is more severe and when the situation is right, like when the tooth is an “adult tooth” or when the crown is absolutely necessary.
